Coast Guard Academy Mission
“To graduate young men and women with sound bodies, stout hearts, and alert minds, with a liking for the sea and its lore, and with that high sense of honor, loyalty, and obedience which goes with trained initiative and leadership; well-grounded in seamanship, the sciences, and amenities, and strong in the resolve to be worthy of the traditions of commissioned officers in the United States Coast Guard in the service of their country and humanity.”

Congressional Nomination?
The United States Coast Guard Academy does not require applicants to receive a congressional nomination to obtain an appointment. So why is this one of THE most difficult service academies to gain acceptance? First off, located on the banks of the Thames River in New London, Connecticut, this prestigious university only averages approximately 16 cadets per class with a student to faculty ratio of 8:1 - this is an amazing educational benefit! The admissions process is largely based on merit - only the most qualified will be offered the appointment. Academics, physical fitness, and leadership are key! This is the only service academy that differs from the standard Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), instead requiring a Physical Fitness Exam (PFE). Additionally, the admissions board may also request an interview to gauge a candidate’s interest, motivation, and leadership - we prepare and tailor our training to these differences to make you overprepared!
